George Cleghorn, Labourer in Waterfoot, and his wife Jane Dickson's children were registered in the parochial registers of Eckford in Roxburghshire. (Researched by Bruce Elliott, 2004.)
From parochial registers of Eckford in Roxburghshire, Scotland (researched by Bruce Elliott, 2004): George Cleghorn Labourer in Waterfoot and Jane Dickson his wife their Child Born the 16th of Augt 1820 and Bapt. The 24th of Sept 1820 named George."
He married Jane Dickson. Born ca 1781 (1851 census) or 1783 (1841 census), in Kelso (1851 census). Died after 1851. At the time of the 1841 census Jane was living with her children George and Agnes and was being "supported by her sons" at Ormiston. The households of her son William and daughter Janet "Jessie" Wood were on either side of her at Ormiston making such support feasible. By the time of the 1851 census she was living in the household of her now widowed daughter Janet "Jessie" Wood and was listed as a pauper although she may have been making some living as a house servant.
In 1851 Census: SCT 1851/787 Eckford-Roxburghshire, Eckford Parish; Address: Old Ormiston: Jane was 70 years old, widowed, and living with her daughter Jess Wood and family.

Census Returns:
Notes: The United Kingdom Census of 1841 recorded the occupants of every UK household on the night of June 6, 1841. It was described as the "first modern census" in that it was the first to record information about every member of the household and because it was administered as a single event, under central control, rather than being devolved to a local level. It formed the model for all subsequent UK censuses, although each went on to refine and expand the questions asked of householders.
It was important for early demographic analysis of the UK population and remains of interest to historians, demographers and genealogists, although the information about each person is quite limited compared with that available from later censuses.
Forms were delivered to every household a few days before the day of the census. These were to be completed by the householder and collected by the enumerator on 7 June, the day after the census. The enumerator would help in the completion of the form if, for example, the householder was illiterate.
The 1841 census recorded people's names, age, sex, occupation, and if they were born "in county". Ages over 15 were to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years so, for example, someone aged 63 should be recorded as aged 60. However, not all enumerators followed this instruction and exact ages may have been recorded as was the case with the entry for the Cleghorn family above.

Notes: The United Kingdom Census of 1851 recorded the people residing in every household on the night of March 30, 1851, and was the second of the UK censuses to include details of household members. However, this census added considerably to the fields recorded in the earlier 1841 census, providing additional details of ages, relationships and origins, making the 1851 census a rich source of information for both demographers and genealogists.
The 1851 census was the first to record the full details of birth location for individuals. Where 1841 had only recorded if an individual was born in county, the 1851 census states the county and parish or town of birth as well.
The 1851 census was the first to record each person's marital status and relationship to the head of the household, as well as details of disability being recorded — with a field for recording the information that an individual was "blind, deaf or imbecile". Each individual's exact age was also recorded (to the nearest year) rather than rounding adult ages down to the nearest five years.
In 1851, much greater detail was asked about people's occupations than in previous censuses. This enabled government analysis of occupations into "classes" and "sub-classes". Masters in trade and manufacture were asked to state the word "master" after the description of their occupation and to state the number of men employed on the day of the census.
The Government also conducted a census of attendance at religious services on 30 March 1851, as part of the project.

From parochial registers of Eckford in Roxburghshire, Scotland (researched by Bruce Elliott, 2004): George Cleghorn Labourer in Waterfoot and Jane Dickson his wife their Child Born the 16h of Augt 1820 and Bapt. The 24th of Sept 1820 named George."
By the time of the 1841 Scotland census George, age 20, born Roxburghshire, Scotland, labourer, lived with his mother Jane (Dickson) Cleghorn, age 58, and sister Agnes, age 17. It seems that his father must have died by this time.
From parochial registers of Eckford, Roxburghshire (Researched by Bruce Elliott, 2004): " 1844 June 1st. George Cleghorn of this Parish and Agnes Hogg of the Parish of Roxburghe gave up their names for proclamation in order to marriage. 14th June 1844 married by the Revd. Mr Lee, Roxburgh."
Church of Scotland church in Eckford where George Cleghorn and Agnes Hogg were married on 1 Jun 1844. It is located midway between Kelso and Jedburgh just east of A698. This church dates from 1665 and was a replacement for an earlier church granted to Jedburgh Abbey in the early 13th century on the same site. There is a sundial that was added in 1668 as well as a set of jougs that date from 1718. Jougs were a standard feature in many Scottish churches, consisting of an iron collar fastened by a short chain to a wall within the church. The collar was placed round the offender's neck and fastened by a padlock. Jougs were used for ecclesiastical as well as civil offences. The north aisle was added ca 1720 with the inside being remodelled in 1898 when the pulpit was moved and box pews removed. An interesting feature is the presence of a mort-house (watch tower) in the cemetery that was used to house watch men on guard against body snatchers. On the ground floor is the burial vault of the Bennets of Marlfield, a nearby estate. The armorial bearings of Sir William Bennet (d 1724) are found above the spacious laird's loft. There is a Roll of Honour for those who served in WW 1 as well as a Memorial to those who died in WW II. In recent years attendance of the church has dwindled until if was only being used twice a year. Looming expensive repairs forced the decision to end its use as a place of worship. The last sermon was preached there on Sunday May 7, 2006. At last report the local Kirk of the Church of Scotland had proposed that the church be sold. However, the presence of an active cemetery surrounding the church created complications. Image Source: Ruth Cleghorn Ker; rephotographed by Tim Patterson, July 22, 2006.
From research compiled by Ruth Cleghorn in 1982 on "George Cleghorn and Descendants 1819-1982", it is believed that George Cleghorn, his wife Agnes Hogg and five children came to New Brunswick in 1853. Five more children were born in New Brunswick. They settled on land in South Tweedside, which they cleared and farmed. George died of a heart attack at age 48 years.
He married Agnes Hogg, daughter of John Hogg & Elizabeth Hume, 14 Jun 1844 in Eckford, Roxburgh Co., Scotland. Born 1825 in Parish Of Roxburghe, Scotland. Died 26 Jan 1899 in Tweedside. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Link to page summarizing ancestors of Agnes Hogg.

Diphtheria Scourge
Three Deaths in the Wood Family at Tweedside--Others Expected.
Our Harvey correspondent writing Jan. 17th, says:
Mrs Wood of Tweedside, wife of Peter C. Wood, who died of diphtheria on Monday, died of the same disease yesterday morning. Their eldest child also died on Wednesday. The remaining child, which is about three months old is not expected to recover. This child and an invalid sister of the late Mr Wood, are the sole survivors of the household. Mrs F. V. Taylor, a trained nurse, was sent from Fredericton yesterday morning, but Mrs Wood was dead when she arrived. The deceased lady was the eldest daughter of the late James Nesbitt of Tweedside, and was about 30 years of age. The people here are appalled by the dreadful work of the disease and every effort is being made to prevent its spreading.
Family Wiped Out
Awful Scourge of Diphtheria at Tweedside
Harvey Station, York County, Jan. 18 -- A whole family, father, mother and two children, have been cut off by diphtheria in Tweedside. On Friday evening Peter C. Wood contracted the disease and died Monday, the elder child died Tuesday and Mrs Wood died on Thursday morning and the younger child a few hours later. The disease is of the most violent type and proved quickly fatal in spite of the best methods of treatment. During the illness of the family their friends and neighbours prepared and brought food and other things necessary, but did not dare enter the house, and the doctor was unable to obtain the nursing required for his patients. Mrs Nesbitt, Mrs Wood's mother, did everything she could to care for them, but she soon became exhausted. Some of the parish officers and others, when they became aware of the state of affairs on Wednesday, joined together and wired Dr. Mullin of Fredericton, asking him to send a trained nurse for Mrs Wood and the child. The doctor at once complied and the nurse arrived Thursday morning only to find Mrs Wood dead and the child dying. Two other families in Tweedside, who had the disease are all recovering, and there has been no further spread of the disease. The dreadful occurrence has cast a deep gloom over the entire community and much sorrow is expressed, as the young couple had many friends and were highly respected.

Terribly Burned
Mrs Wm Bell of Tweedside Badly Injured--Clothing Caught Fire.
Harvey Station, York Co., May 1 -- A terrible occurrence was reported from Tweedside, this county, yesterday. While Mrs William Bell was attending to her household about noon, her clothing caught fire from the stove.
She made every effort to extinguish the blaze, but was unsuccessful. In great fright she rushed out of the house, seeking the aid of her husband, who was at work in the field close by. Attracted by her cries, he was horrified to find his wife enveloped in flames. With difficulty he got the fire put out, but not before most of his wife's clothing was burned off.

FROM THE AUDIO SCRAPBOOK
A Conversation with Harry Cleghorn, 1973
BY REV. DR. WILLIAM RANDALL
EXCERPTS FROM AN INFORMAL INTERVIEW
The following audio excerpts are from a 1973 interview of Henry "Harry" Robert Cleghorn (16 Jan 1899 - 19 Jan 1981) carried out by Rev. Dr. Bill Randall. Harry was a bachelor who was well known for his expertise as a blacksmith. Harry only had a rudimentary education and went to work in the woods as a young age where he worked on many river drives. In the following tape Harry covers a lot of topics ranging from what he did when he went to work in the woods, to being a seasonal laborer, to fishing and hunting, and of course his career as a blacksmith. Perhaps one of the most interesting stories is his light hearted account of his brush with the law following the discovery that he had been illegally shooting moose one season. Harry was the grandson of George Cleghorn, who settled in South Tweedside in 1853. Hazen has an interesting lilting accent that was once typical of those living in Tweedside and is often referred to as the "Tweedside Twang". This accent has now largely disappeared.
Track 1. Harry describes how he began working in the woods at age 14 and subsequent river drives (Quality of tape is poor for a few seconds near beginning of track).
Track 2. Harry talks about Indians and a baby's grave at Duck Point on the St. Croix River while on a river drive.
Track 3. Harry describes maintaining a trapline around Oromocto Lake.
Track 4. Harry describes the difficulties of getting by with only seasonal work.
Track 5. Harry talks about his parents and siblings and home life as well as about the Cleghorn migration from Scotland.
Track 6. Harry talks about the fishing in the old days on Oromocto Lake.
Track 7. Harry talks about hunting and then goes on to describe shooting 28 moose one fall and how that resulted in him spending 60 days in jail.
Track 8. Harry describes how bad weather resulted in him getting stuck on the back side of Oromocto Lake while moose hunting.
Track 9. Harry talks about getting older.
Track 10. Harry talks about his mother and family genealogy.
Track 11. Harry talks about Ben Morrow and how he came to Harvey after serving as a soldier in the Brockway garrison which guarded the Brockway Bridge.
Track 12. Harry talks about where the Cleghorns came from in Scotland.
Track 13. Harry describes fishing on the Magaguadavic River.
Track 14. Harry talks about a good fishing hole in the Kedron Lake.
Track 15. Harry talks about how much easier it is to trap using a snow mobile.
Track 16. Harry describes how he became a black smith and making tempered bear traps, horse shoes, and truck parts.
Track 17. Harry discusses his short school career.
Track 18. Harry talks about his nice $200 1966 car, which although rusted out has a good working engine.
